Midsummer temperatures at lower elevations fluctuate from the low 70s (21°C) to more than 100°F (38°C); while temperatures at middle elevations range from the 50s (10°C) to the high 70s (25°C). Winter brings plenty of snow, but temperatures seldom dip below 0° F (-18°C).

The middle elevation would include the most visited areas of the parks (Grant Grove, Cedar Grove, and Giant Forest). Warm daytime and cool nighttime temperatures characterize summer in the middle elevations. Occasional afternoon thundershowers can be expected. Much of the 40-45 inches of yearly precipitation comes during the winter. As a result, a deep blanket of snow often covers this area from December to May, but sub-zero temperatures are rare.

The high elevations, 9,000 feet and above, would be the high Sierra. Summer weather in the high Sierra is remarkably pleasant by mountain standards, but you can expect an occasional thundershower. Be prepared with a good waterproof jacket and lightweight ground cloth or plastic that can be rigged as a tent.
